February Officer of the Month: Officer Wayne Rumore, of the Mounted Unit
Award: Gift Certificate donated by Irene’s Cuisine
On Monday, February 25, 2013, Officer Rumore, while working a paid detail, immediately observed a Ford pick-up truck parked in an odd location in a parking lot. He also observed a male subject standing by an open door on the pick-up truck. At the time, Officer Rumore did not believe that anything was suspicious about the situation, so he went inside to begin his detail duties.
While inside, Officer Rumore was advised by the manager that the same Ford pick-up truck had broken down on Friday, February 22, 2013, and had to be pushed away. Officer Rumore relocated back outside in order to speak to the person who was observed standing in the open door of the pick-up, in order to find out his intentions in moving the truck. It was at this point Officer Rumore learned that this person was gone. Officer Rumore immediately observed some type of I.E.O. (Improvised Explosive Device). The device had a fuse connected to it and it was burning. Officer Rumore immediately closed the door of the vehicle and notified the NOPD Special Operations Division and the Fire Department of the situation. He immediately ordered the evacuation of all customers and employees and the area was cordoned off.
Upon the arrival of the Special Operations Division Bomb Squad, eight devices were located. Five of them were located by the bomb technician and three were located by use of the remote control robot. Due to the quick thinking, actions and military experience of Sergeant Major / Officer Wayne Rumore, a very grave situation ended without any injury, loss of life or property damage.
